Belgian Bilateral Scholarships for study in Belgium
General
information:
Within
the framework of its development cooperation
activities in
Vietnam, the Government of Belgium wants to support the
Government of Vietnam in its efforts to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable
development. The Belgian Bilateral Scholarship
(BBS) forms an
important part of this cooperation programme.
The BBS programme is managed and
executed by the Development Cooperation Division under the Embassy
of Belgium to Vietnam and the Belgian Technical
Cooperation (BTC).
The scholarship is open for students who want to
follow a Master or Mixed PhD program available at a Belgian
university. Although no restriction is imposed to any field of study,
the programme does give priorities to the studies related to the
subject of
environment, water and sanitation, waste management, education,
health, public administration, agriculture and rural development.
For
the academic year 2008-2009, forty (40) scholarships are available
and target young, motivated
academics, researchers, project staffs and others
who possess the potential
to contribute to the development of Vietnam.
Each applicant can apply for one (01) study programme at one (01)
university only and it's the applicant's sole responsibility to
make choice of the training course.
To
obtain a Belgian Bilateral Scholarship, applicants must
satisfy a number of
minimum requirements
before being
assessed on a competitive basis by a Selection Committee. While
academic qualifications remains
an important criteria, the Selection Committee will also take into
consideration aspects such as gender, geographical
distribution, sector
of study and
institutional balance in making its final
decision in scholarship
awarding. Interested candidate can

Student self screening: candidates are strongly encouraged to
contact directly the university for specific entry requirements
of the course of their interest. Information on available courses can be
found on website of Belgian universities.

Selection process:
The
selection follows a three-stages process:
1.
Pre-selection: File screening
2.
Selection: interview of successful candidates in Step 1
3.
Admission by the university:
Application
file of successful candidates after Step 2 will be sent to
Belgian universities for academic qualification assessments.
In
some certain cases, student will be requested to supplement their
file depending on specific admission procedure of each universities.
Scholarship award:
After
receiving admission for selected candidates from corresponding universities,
BTC will inform these candidates of a
scholarship awarded. This contact will be made base on a case to
case basis during July - September of the year.
The
successful applicant must also satisfy requirement
for entry visa to Belgium set by
the Belgian Consular Section of the Belgium Embassy
to Vietnam. All scholars must ensure
their readiness
to commence their studies in Belgium during
September – October 2008.
BTC
Hanoi will provide support and assistant to successful scholars
for their departure to Belgium and BTC Brussels will handle the
student files during their stay in Belgium.
The scholarship:
The
Belgian Bilateral Scholarship covers:
tuition and other compulsory academic fees, return
airfare to Belgium, monthly stipend, basic health insurance
and some other supports.
For scholars following the Mixed PhD programme, finance support
for fieldwork is also available.
