FHIA-01 or Goldi (Local name):
Type of material: Hybrid
ITC number:0504
Tolerance to
pests and diseases:
Among the first FHIAs that were introduced in Kagera (FHIA-01, FHIA-02 and FHIA-03), FHIA-01 is
the best in terms of resistance to pests and diseases and only few incidences of unidentified
attacks have been recorded.
General acceptance and performance:
This variety has been adopted as a cooking type (95%) but has a relatively acid and
bitter taste as compared to other varieties. The variety is picking up mainly due to its good
performance in terms of yield and its resistance to pests, diseases and drought. Some farmers use
it also as a brewing type.
The average bunch weight is 20 Kg
with a minimum and maximum recorded weight of 4 and 72 Kg respectively (see graph - 519 bunches harvested).
Direct and indirect diffusion:
FHIA-01 has been introduced for the first time by ARI-Maruku (Agricultural Research Institute) in 1995
in the Kagera region. In 1997, KCDP started multiplying massively this variety. A total of
2,487 in-vitro plants have been received from KULeuven till today. 32,037 plants have been directly
diffused till December 2001. 73,986 plants have been indirectly diffused so far on the minimum hypothesis
that one plant produces 2 suckers every year. This brings the total diffusion of FHIA-01 to 106,023
plants in March 2001.
